This announcement reaffirms Sun’s position as the leading provider of platforms for the Web economy and its role as the largest commercial open source contributor (even Solaris OS is available free and open source). This opens up MySQL to a whole new and exciting arena and is expected to gain new distribution through Sun’s channels including its OEM relationships with Intel, IBM and Dell.

Verizon To Open Its Wireless Network

Verizon LogoFirst it was Google’s Android, now Verizon has joined the bandwagon and is launching an open platform for it’s CDMA powered cell phones. This will allow users with cell phones from other carriers to switch to Verizon without needing to change the handsets. The catch is, only Sprint customers with unlocked cell phones are able to switch to this ever declining market which has switched to the more universally common GSM technology!

Google’s Android the next big thing for Mobile Technology?

The simple answer is no, however, Linux the open-source OS might get a huge push and even end up becoming the platform of choice rooting out competition like Windows and Palm. Although handset manufactures like LG, HTC, Motorola and Samsung, chip firms such as Qualcomm and mobile networks like T-Mobile and China Mobile have all showed interest in partnering with Google, none have made any specific commitment towards moving in that direction yet.

Google believes that Android powered phones will make the internet experience on a mobile “better than on a PC”, it acquired Android in 2005 specifically to tap the youth appeal for all things “wireless”, but one expert thinks the hype is just that, a poor PR move and nothing more. Don’t expect a phone powered by Android until mid-2008, so only time and patience can tell if it will take off, in the mean time, enjoy your iPhone.

image of target.com websiteTarget.com is getting sued, this lawsuit will have worldwide implication for anyone selling anything online. That is scary both as a consumer and a web designer; but issues such as this can be avoided.

There are many ways to include good practice techniques to make your site accessible to the blind; here are a few examples:

  • Adding alt and title tags to describe images and URIs
  • Structure your site to present the most recent news/post first from top down when you view the source page of your site
  • Avoiding pop-ups

Here’s an interesting article to make your blog blind friendly by the American Foundation for the Blind.

Emphasis on building sites that are not only standard compliant but also accessible for the blind will pay off in two folds:

  • You will provide service to the 1.5 million or so blind web surfers in the US, who would otherwise turn to competitive sites
  • Your site will be more search engine friendly, the bots that crawl your site pretty much follow the same flow technique used by the software that converts sites to voice interpretation
